I save my compassion for genuine victims. If someone does not get a seat on the bus because they are black, I'm on their side. But if someone doesn't get a seat on the bus because all men are bastards and should stand for a lady, then I'm a Heartless Bitch. If someone is sexually abused, I'm on their side. But if their idea of abuse is not getting a dozen red roses after a date, then I'm a Heartless Bitch. If someone has to break bricks for two bucks an hour to survive, my heart bleeds. But I can't just can't seem to work up a tear for those who cannot get "good help these days" by paying peanuts to refugees supporting a family of ten in Afghanistan. If a child is neglected then it is a tragedy, but if that neglect constitutes not getting the latest mobile phone - then I'm cold as hell. Victim hood is not a costume donned to gain attention. Those who abuse people's capacity for sympathy rob real victims of that sympathy. That's why I save it and why whiners think I'm a Heartless Bitch.
