Rachel
I have been a single mother since my son was 18 months old, he’ll soon be 21 years old. I've always lived my life the way I believe it should be, with dignity and respect and I want my son to see that women are just as strong or stronger than some men.
I work for a large corporation in Silicon Valley, California. I have been with this company for almost 12 years. I have worked so hard for this company that back in 2004, I became ill because of the stress that I'd incurred with all the huge projects this company was throwing at me. The pay is good and so are the bonuses, but not as good as my reporting manager's bonus. I currently work for a guy whose bonus is tied to the percentage of marketshare in our industry, to be exact, $500k. I for one will not see a percentage of his bonus, we are in a different and much smaller bonus scale.
Three years ago, I moved into a different department. There are several of us who have the same title, "Business Management" in other words, "sales" and part of our responsibility is to bring in business so we can acquire the "magic number" of marketshare in our industry. Most of the time, I am on target on bringing in business and I was counting on being promoted along with my bonus. Not only am I a single mother, my father who is dying of cancer, is counting on me supporting him by paying some of his hospital bills and my boss is aware of my personal life.
About 1 month ago, my boss announced my colleague’s promotion - he promoted someone who was bringing in much less business and who had less tenure. I was shocked. That promotion was rightfully mine because I had earned it! I came to find out that the woman he had promoted had been sleeping with him! Fucken asshole! He knew that promotion was for me, but instead, he gave it to the woman who was blowing him under his desk! Needless to say, the asshole couldn't look at me in the eye ever since, and our relationship has changed dramatically. That was when I started my job search outside the company.
Two weeks ago he asked me to go to Japan to make that one last effort to acquire an important account that I have been working on getting for the last 2 years. This account would have brought us about $10 million dollars of business and would have added another percentage to our "magic number" of marketshare. I responded, "Why don't you ask that woman who's been blowing you under your desk to go?!” His mouth dropped and he heard the clitter-clatter of my heels as I walked out of his office.
I’m just awaiting for my severance package so I can get more money and get out of here.
And by the way, we lost the account to a competitor and there goes his fucken bonus. I couldn't care less.
