I have evolved into a Heartless Bitch because I'm gotten too old to lie to people, skirt around the truth, or make people feel better at my expense. When I was young and had more energy, I jumped through every hoop possible to shade unpleasant truths, and I gave till it hurt. To everybody. Because if it didn't hurt, I just wasn't giving enough. I wanted everybody in the world to feel good. I just forgot that I was somebody, too.

Now I've decided that if only one person can be happy or keep their sanity in a particular situation, it needs to be me. If I can make both of us happy, I'll do it. If I can make you or somebody else happy without draining my bank account, strength, or mental marbles, sign me up. But if not...you are on your own. I've limited the amount of time and energy I have listening to complaints to a bare minimum, and friends now know that at some point I will ask them: "but what will you DO about it?" If the answer is "nothing," they have to stop griping. That's the thing about being an old lady: you realize that there is a time limit on everything. If you must gripe, at least let it be about something else periodically, not the same thing for the last 15 years.
