When I fuck up, I know it's my doing. When someone else fucks up, I know it's not my doing. When we've both fucked up, I'll share the responsibility. But I'm not taking on all of it.

When I do well, I know where the credit goes. I'm the one that did it - a story, a project, a job. But very little happens alone and I won't claim your credit.

My HBIness means dreaming high, dreaming far, and skimping on the sentimentality. It means change, passion, outrage, common sense, love, laughter, honesty, and judgment. It means I think for my own damn self, am sometimes wrong, and am frequently right. I can deal with it if someone disagrees with me. But can he (or she) deal with it too?

Occasionally the cost of independence and assertiveness is high: loneliness, for example. But self-respect is priceless.
