and Damned Proud of it!

I'm a bitch.

I freely admit it, and I feel no shame when others sling this supposedly heinous epithet toward me. In fact, rather than shrink away from being called a bitch, I revel in its glory. The way the word rolls off the tongue with the first few letters and then the final, "ch" lends a biting ending.

While some may consider bitchiness a bad thing, and may be offended after receiving the title, both history and my personal experience have taught me that there is nothing to fear. The predominant connotations assert that bitches are women who complain, are conceited, competitive, aggressive and vain. At the same time our society shuns and labels women who possess these traits, we glorify men for being strong and powerful. Even the English language helps to keep women from being in control. In times of extreme frustration with a member of the male sex, "asshole" is one of the only insults to throw, whereas a plethora of colorful adjectives make themselves available for female offenders. Most American women have felt the sting of such words as "broad," "witch," "whore," and the odious "cunt" for whatever crime they have committed. "Bitch" also has associations with emasculation, and therefore bitch sits next to "ball-buster" and "nut-crusher" in several thesauruses. What is interesting about this is that throughout history, more women's lives have been destroyed by the machinations of men than vice versa, and yet "ovary-destroyer" has not entered the English vernacular.

Accepting the reality of my bitchiness does not make me a lesbian or a man-hater. I enjoy men and their company both in platonic and not-so-platonic scenarios. However, any man who chooses to be my friend must realize that I do not shy away from my inner bitch. My pride in being a bitch does not make me a bad woman, or a bad person for that matter. Rather, it means I am independent, secure (both emotionally and monetarily) and unconcerned with what other people think of me. It also means that I don't care what other people call me. This in turn, gives me extraordinary power not only over men, but also over other women who would assert themselves except for the fact that they fear labels like "bitch."
