I belong to a long line of Heartless Bitches, who fought for the accomplishments and respect they deserve. My grandmother joined the WAVEs in WWII and was the first woman in the family to earn a college degree. My mother fought her way through law school as a single parent of three and is the first to own a business, and I am the first to have attended a U.S. service academy as one of less than 150 females in a class of 950; in one year will be the first female in my family to pin on officer bars. They taught me the meaning of assertiveness tempered with dignity, and I hope I can share that with those of my sisters who have ever been looked in the face and told they were just a woman.
