Emma
In this world, having clear cut ideas of who you are, what you want
and how you're going to get it is prized in men and unacceptable if
you're female. I say fuck that. Fuck the suggestions that women
play a mere supporting role to the more "important" male players.
Fuck that women have to fade into the background of their partner and
pick up their slack. I actively fight against the notion that talented
women are just resources, there for people to dip into whether these
women like it or not. I will not squash my identity and conform to how
society tells me I should look "because you're a woman." If I want to
wear a short skirt and tight top, it's not because I want to attract
a man -- it's because I'm enjoying the clothes and how they look on
me. And if some bozo wants to make jokes about my appearance not
being appropriate for a scientist, I will take great pleasure in
effecting verbal castration. I'm heterosexual, but my sexuality
does not revolve around a man, how to get one or how to keep one.
It's about time things changed and women, their actions and who
they are should be recognised as entirely separate to the needs
and demands of others. I fight for this every day, and not just
against men. There are women out there who "self police" their
own gender to make sure their "sisters" are not stepping out line
too much. What a betrayal! Like the woman who works in a male
dominated company who tries to knock the only other female executive
out of her job because she has the shitheaded notion that there is
a "male league" and "ladies league." Or women from more traditional
cultures who reinforce the oppression of women in their families by
trying to stop them becoming more liberated because "it's not our
way."
I respect the culture of others, but I have no problem getting
in someone's face if they try to apply their cockeyed anti-female
notions to me and my life or to the lives of other women. If you
want to stay at home and look after your kids and have no need to
have a life outside of your family, I will accept that. Just don't
expect me to respect you or even like you. And if you try to change
me into something more acceptable to you -- expect all hell to break
loose.
