Clare
When I was 16 and living in Taiwan, my father told me to forget about
college because when I graduated, I'd have to find a job. Instead, I enrolled in
an honors program, did 6 AP's, and applied to colleges. When I was accepted into
every one of them with scholarships, I packed my life in two suitcases, hopped
on a plane, and moved to New York City. I attended Barnard College, a liberal
women's college, and was granted sophomore-standing for my pre-college courses.
I held two jobs throughout my college career to make ends meet.
In college, I worked as a rape crisis counselor, an editor for a literary
Journal and I was a part-time teacher for pre-K students. I did scientific research in the field of neuroendocrinology. In the summer, I worked for NYC's Department of Health.
I am now a graduate student in marine biology. I gut fish, wade through
mud, dissect animals, set gillnets, tag and track fish with boats. I don't pet
dolphins. Marine biology isn't Sea World. My mother is convinced I will be a
shrimp farmer. I don't give a damn because I love being on the ocean.
I like to use bad words, slang, to go off on unrelated tangents, to vent
about things that upset me, and to generally express myself. I speak up when I
need to.
I hold the following views: feminist, pro-choice, equal rights for
everyone, bisexuality, liberal, anti-war, conservationist, socialism, and
probably several other controversial and potentially offensive views. I oppose
the death penalty. Ignorant, racist people never fail to piss me off.
I am a feminist. I don't hate men. I've never burnt my bra.
Does this make me a Heartless Bitch? I don't know. I know I am strong, I'm
not afraid to pursue things I want, and I love being a tomboy. I'm opinionated,
stubborn, intelligent, and attractive. Most of the time, that's enough to be
called a Bitch.
Yes! I want to read more from Real Life Heartless Bitches
